About STEM - Part 1

Understand STEM. We all know stem as part of a plant/tree. The part that connects the leaves to the roots. That’s the stem we are used to, the stem that we all know. Many may wonder am I about to elaborate a tree or a plant part by mentioning stem.  However, that’s not nearly what I intend to bring to you in this fascinating knowledgebank blog. Although to be honest, wearing my gums as a botanist, that plant stem we all know, describing about it scientifically can be really interesting trust me, but still that’s not what I wish to narrate to you all today. STEM is a short abbreviation of the words Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The four letters that make STEM word are derived from the first letters of these words. This STEM acronym was introduced in 2001 by scientific administrators at the U.S National Science Foundation (NSF). The organization previously used the acronym SMET when referred to the career field in those disciplines or a curriculum that inte...

You are All You Can Be

Do you know what is driving you? Why do you work so hard to get what you want? Do you know your purpose?  The reasons for what you want to achieve are your WHY. Your WHY is very much related to your purpose in life. We may have everything that we could ever want and be successful in whatever we do in life but trust me, you are still empty inside and your life can still lack meaning if you've no any purpose in life said *one priest* in a homily. At times you may have achieved your dream(s). You are famous. Then what? You are the best in class So what?? You are the best artist So what?? As a matter of fact, achievements, wealth and recognition in themselves are useless if they don't answer the WHY question.  WHY? because the reason for doing something is more important than what is done. Everything has a *purpose* in life. The arts, science, living things and non living things, have a *purpose of being.*  Each plays its own part in the essential architecture of life....

The Incident that lives in my life! - Sangúdi Sangúdi

It was on Thursday, the 7th day of February 2011, early in the morning, I had already taken my breakfast, ready to go to school. I was surprised to notice that my grandfather,   Mr Sang'udi James was already awake because it was unusual for him to be an early bird! Not a deal though, I greeted him and told him that I was ready to take my morning walk to school. He looked at me with his gentle eyes, I could tell the worry on his face! _"Study hard my grandson" he finally opened his lips, giving out a weak but yet audible voice with strong and extremely powerful words echoing in the walls of my mind up to this moment.   I was in the seventh grade at Bariadi Primary School where it was mandatory to be at school compounds early enough to be given a number, to avoid confrontations with the teacher on duty. I was a running warrior, and so being at school on time was in no way to be a problem to my fast moving legs! After three sessions,   it was a lunch break and theref...

Males Engagement in Creating a Gender Equal World!

Why Boys and Men Engagement is Important in Achieving a Gender Equal World. By: Jennifer Kayombo (SRHR and Gender Activist from Tanzania) For our dream of having an egalitarian society to become a reality, boys and men engagement remains critical and at the center of the realization. A more sustainable social, political and economic progress will only be attained if everyone - male or female will be involved. We need to take everyone on board because there is a role for each one of us and dismantling patriarchy needs our consolidated efforts. Some of the conducts in a male-dominated society have made some of female counterparts becoming even more patriarchal than male themselves. Whilst that happens; girls and women remain at greater disadvantages as revealed by the report of the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) titled as ‘ The State of World Population – 2020.’  The report state that there are estimated 33,000 cases of Child Marriage which happens every day across the world...
